Domaine Combier

Pont-de-l’Isère

You can’t dictate to Nature. You work with Her.” In the Combier family, this belief has been handed down through the generations, from Maurice and Paulette, pioneers of organic growing, to Laurent and Ghislaine, trailblazers in Crozes-Hermitage, and then their children Julien and David. “We’d dreamt of seeing them take over“. They came into the business through the door of their preferences and then came to a new realisation. Julien is passionate about agricultural machinery and now just as passionate about the living world surrounding the vineyards. David is a keen traveller who has already visited many countries, but has now discovered a passion for a single place, the terroir and the AOC. Each has his own personality, but they share the same care and respect for the life that makes wine a living and profoundly human thing: family life, team life, the life of the soil, the life of the vine (and the life all around it!), the life of the grape… What they are really cultivating is a duty to the terroir: to get the best out of it to create wines that are “good at the beginning, good in the middle and good at the end!

Vineyards

Pioneers in organic growing in the Rhône Valley since 1970.
The domaine covers 60 hectares: 51 ha AOC Crozes Hermitage (Syrah, Marsanne & Roussanne) – 3 ha AOC Saint Joseph (Syrah) – 6 ha Bergeron apricots. The domaine represents the two ends of the appellation. To the north, in the communes of Gervans and Serves-sur-Rhône, the Syrah vines are planted on exposed bedrock and very permeable granite soils. To the south, on the Les Châssis plateau, they are planted in clay-limestone soils covered with smooth pebbles. This diversity of soils is a tremendous asset, allowing the domaine to play around with the blends and craft wines with a unique character. Great care and attention to detail in the vineyards are essential to producing great wines! The quality of a wine depends on the quality of the fruit!

Cellar

The quality of a wine comes from the vineyards. The role of the work in the cellar is to bring out the expression of our terroirs and grape varieties, to refine the work carried out on the different plots of vines, and to ensure that each wine is a perfect combination of all the decisions we have made. Concrete eggs, WineGlobes, Foudres, Amphoras, Demi-muids, Pièces, Barriques… All these different materials, shapes and sizes allow us to work the wines’ textures and aromas. The work carried out in the winery is a perfect illustration of this constant quest to ascertain what works best for the wines.
